For people with diabetes, one may wonder if taking a high protein, low carbohydrate diabetic diet plan good for health. The thing to note is that such diet is not good for health and in fact can be dangerous to people with Type II diabetes. That is because they are already at risk of kidney diseases due to the fact that the kidney aged more easily, and by putting excessive food protein in the body can cause more stress on the kidneys.

Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are food that is high in carbohydrates and are in fact good for people with diabetes. Although these food are high in carbohydrates, it is only stored as fat in the body if the amount of calories consumed is greater than the amount needed in the body.  In other words, unless you overeat, these high carbohydrates food is alright for the body. And these foods contain vitamins, minerals and fiber that is good for the body too.

Of course, some people claimed that they have lost weight by consuming high protein, low carbohydrates diabetic diet plan. But these people lost weight not because such diet is low in carbohydrates. They lost weight because the foods they eat are low in calories. People do lose weight quickly, but what they lose is not fat, it is usually body water. And if you continue with such a diet plan, you will eventually lose some fats. But at the same time, you are losing muscle tissues.

When you eat too little carbohydrates, your body starts to burn protein tissue to produce energy for the body. And when you gain back the weight, it is likely to store as body fat, not muscle tissue. If this cycle repeats itself many times, you are most like to get fatter, and at the same time put more stress on the liver and kidneys as they have to work harder to process protein to energy than carbohydrates.

So in general it is not advisable for anyone to consume more protein than carbohydrates. And for people with diabetes, such a diabetic diet plan is definitely a big no-no.

Hi Chris,
I'm wondering if there is any research evidence to back up your claim about protein being damaging for healthy Kidneys of Diabetis people. In all the research I have done I can only find references to high protein possibly being a strain on people with kidney disease.

Reducing carbs is really sensible for people with Diabetes. Much of the research I've seen suggests that there is a carb consumption / Insulin tussle going on that is creating insulin insensitivity. EG consume too many carbs quickly increase glucose, pancreas goes nuit producing insulin cells can't absorb the glucose quickly enough so more insulin etc. etc.
This is really the basis of the low Gi diet - an attempt to reduce the glucose loading while still be able to eat a " modern Det " reality is we would be better of returning to the diet of 40 years ago - meat and 3 veg.

I think you are misguided. Suggest you read Dr. Richard Bernstein's books - he is an endocrinologist who himself is a Type 1 diabetic. Managing your consumption of carbohydrates is key to maintaining level blood sugars.
