Diabetic ketoacidosis is not only a dangerous condition, but can lead to death or prolonged coma if it is not treated properly.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition where the level of ketones is dangerously high. Ketones are acids that build up in the blood and appear in the urine when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin. Ketones can become poisonous to the body and serve as a warning sign to tell you that your diabetes is out of control or that you are becoming sick.

The first symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis include thirst and high blood sugar levels according to a University of Iowa study. The secondary symptoms include fatigue, dry or flushed skin, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, a fruity odor on the breath, and persistent confusion. If you believe you are currently experiencing these problems, you should schedule a check up with your physician. If you are already vomiting, it is especially important that you see a doctor soon.

You can also monitor your keytone level with urine tests, which you can conduct at your house without help. If a urine test shows you have a high level of ketones, then you should not exercise. You should check with your doctor immediately, since this can mean that you need a drastic lifestyle change—and your doctor will know how to best handle the situation.

Diabetic ketoacidosis can result if your body is not getting enough insulin because of the diabetes. In addition, if you feel sick and do not eat, then your ketone levels may go up as a result of the diabetic ketoacidosis. Therefore, sometimes missing a meal will cause your ketone levels to increase. This is why it is so crucial to eat regularly and in predictable intervals; otherwise, your blood sugar may fluctuate wildly.
