Do you have diabetes? If so, foot care and finding the right pair of shoes is should be on the top of your list of priorities.

Since diabetes can cause damage to the feet, complications can result if the proper care isn’t taken. Good diabetic shoes will help prevent these complications. That’s why it’s important to find the perfect pair.

Before you start looking for a pair of diabetic shoes, you should contact your foot doctor for a consultation session. You may have to first go to a general practitioner to get a referral to a podiatrist.
If you have specific problems with your feet, your podiatrist will be able to give you a prescription for diabetic shoes or inserts.

Once you know what you are looking for, consider the type of shoe you need. Consider what you will be using them for and whether or not you will need inserts. Then keep in mind some of the following tips when shopping for your diabetic shoes.

If you wear a specific type of sock most of the time, then be sure to try the shoes on while you are wearing those socks so you can see how your toes fit with the sock and shoe. It is also best to try shoes on as late in the day as possible since this is when you feel swell.

It is best to shop for your diabetic shoes in person since you will need them fitted and it’s easier to find the right shoe if you can try them on without guessing through the Internet or in a catalog.

Measure both feet before you go shopping to determine which is the longest. Then use the longer foot to fit your shoes. Your foot should always fit the shoe in all parts; it should not be tight in some and loose in others.

If you are going to need inserts then take these with you and try them in the shoe to make sure they will work. In addition, find out how deep the shoe toe box is. You should always have room to move your toes.

Your shoes should be comfortable from the moment you walk around the store in them. No matter what anyone says shoes do not need to be broken in before they become comfortable.
