Get a FREE Glucose Meter!

Defined Tag:

The first diabetic finger stick devices were put in wide use in the 1970s for testing blood sugar levels. These were the first generation of blood glucose meters. However, today in diabetic supply testing there are meters that are less painful and have established themselves as a second generation.

The new diabetic supply testing meters require less blood for testing and allow you to test on various parts of your body that have less nerve endings, such as your arm. While these diabetic supply testing, meters have only been available for a short time there is already five different brands to choose from on the market.

The first brand to introduce these second generation of diabetic supply testing was AtLast in December 1999. Since this time, One Touch has changed their test strips to require less blood and allow testing on other parts of the body. The One Touch Ultra is a newer version that works similar to older models but allows faster testing that takes only five seconds to give a reading.

Of all the diabetic supply testing meters available today the Free Style uses the least amount of blood. The newest brand MediSense Sof-Tact allows you to hide the test strip, lancet and blood drop inside the machine.

For TheraSense’s Free Style meter test have shown that an arm reading may lag up to a half hour behind the fingertip results. This can be a problem if you need a timely detection of hypoglycemia when you blood glucose levels are falling too quickly.

However, a third generation of diabetic supply testing is fast arriving. These meters will continually test blood glucose levels and sound an alarm to help guard against low blood sugar. The first of these meters the GlucoWatch was available on the market in March 2001. However, the cost of one of these meters in between four and five hundred dollars and the sensors, which need to be replaced periodically, cost between four and five dollars.
