Diabetic retinopathy is a progressive damage to the retina because of long-term diabetes. The damage can cause blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is because of damage to the blood vessels in the eye’s retina. The retina is the light-sensitive outer layer of the eye.

There are two forms of diabetic retinopathy. One is non-proliferate which is when it is in the early stage of the disease and is not as severe. This is usually when the blood vessels start to leak fluid into the eye causing the vision to blur. The second stage is proliferate which is the advanced stages of the disease with severe damage. The new blood vessels growing in the eye are prone to hemorrhage and can cause vision loss and retinal scarring.

People with either type one or two diabetes are at risk for diabetic retinopathy. The longer a person has diabetes the greater the chance for diabetic retinopathy to develop. Regardless of diabetic treatment after thirty or more years with diabetes, almost everyone will show signs of diabetic retinopathy.

The signs of diabetic retinopathy include poor night vision at first, which then advances to floaters, or spots in front of the eyes. Then in the more advanced stages, there can be blurred vision and blindness. However, some people can show no signs up until major bleeding occurs.

Diabetic retinopathy can be diagnosed through regular eye exams. The main treatment is the control of blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol. However, treatment will not reverse existing damage, but it will keep it from progressing. Laser surgery is possible to keep the blood vessels from leaking or to remove fragile vessels. Surgery may also be done when there is a hemorrhage or retinal detachment.

If diabetics control their blood sugar and blood pressure, they can improve their outcome with the disease. However, without treatment blindness can result. Some complications from diabetic retinopathy include glaucoma and retinal detachment.
